After nearly nine successful years as the Executive Director of Trades NL, Darin King has announced that he will be leaving the organization later in 2024.
Since joining Trades NL in 2016, King has led the organization through a substantial makeover and rebrand. He has been a leader on diversity in the workplace, a strong advocate for developing Indigenous partnerships and continues to be a vocal advocate for skilled trades workers.
Under King’s leadership, Trades NL has received two National Awards – a Workforce Development Award from the Canadian Building Trades Unions for the establishment of an Indigenous Skilled Trades Office, and a Community Benefits Award from the Toronto Community Benefits Network, awarded to those paving the way for a more inclusive construction industry and contributing to sustainable communities.
“The Board of Directors sincerely thanks Darin for his stewardship of the organization during his tenure. Through his commitment to advancing member issues, he has raised the industry’s profile, and his legacy of leadership will be long lasting. While we are sad to see him move on, we understand he is interested in taking on new challenges and wish him all the best in this next stage of his career,” said Tom Woodford, President of Trades NL.
While his impact on the organization is evident, his unwavering commitment to engagement stands as the bedrock of his success at Trades NL. Through his steadfast dedication to collaboration, he has strengthened the relationship with Trades NL’s partner associations, contractors and government, and developed new strategic partnerships that have not only delivered more value to Trades NL’s 15,000 members but also elevated the profile for the provincial unionized construction industry.
“The construction industry is essential to Newfoundland and Labrador’s economic success and quality of life, yet it does not always get the credit it deserves. I am so proud to have brought more attention to an industry that has such a profound impact on our province and affects positive change in our communities every day,” says King. “I wish nothing but success to my colleagues at Trades NL and the hardworking members they represent. And I will continue to advocate for local benefits and local hiring.”
A search process is currently underway with a goal of a smooth transition and continuing the positive momentum gained under King’s leadership.
