Trades NL Congratulates Premier, Cabinet; Seeks Meeting to Discuss Supports for Trades Workers

April 9, 2021 – Trades NL offered congratulations and best wishes to Premier Andrew Furey and his new cabinet today, and pledged to work quickly with government to implement commitments made during the election which will get Newfoundlanders and Labradorians working.

“We understand the Premier and his government are facing serious challenges between the pandemic and subsequent economic collapse – within our own organization the majority of our members have been without employment for quite some time. In an effort to work collaboratively towards a more robust economy, we have written Premier Furey to take him up on his campaign commitment to consult Trades NL as his government implements strategies for our province’s workers.  History has proven that stimulating the economy with good construction jobs is the quickest and most productive way to rejuvenate the economy, and we are hopeful that Government will secure maximum construction jobs from our natural resource and public infrastructure projects for the local skilled trades workforce.”
– Darin King, Executive Director, Trades NL

On February 8, 2021 Premier Furey wrote Trades NL’s President, John Leonard, committing to a number of items important to skilled trade workers in Newfoundland and Labrador, including:

  1. creating opportunities for workers in Newfoundland and Labrador and maximizing benefits for NL residents on resource development projects, and
  2. requiring contractors working on Government of Newfoundland and Labrador public infrastructure projects to prioritize the hiring of qualified Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, as well as including provisions for the inclusion of under-represented workers, monitoring and accountability.

“In the months leading up to the provincial election, we were pleased to see Premier Furey advance discussions on the implementation of a Newfoundland and Labrador Benefits Agreement framework, and we look forward to resuming those discussions with the Premier and his appropriate Cabinet Ministers in the coming weeks.”
– Darin King, Executive Director, Trades NL
