TRADES NL RELIEVED WORKER SAFETY A PRIORITY –

Operations with the West White Rose Project Suspended amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

March 22, 2020 – Trades NL is expressing relief as the West White Rose Project in Argentia has been halted by Husky Energy to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus among its employees, contractors, and the community due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were relieved to hear from the project contractor late this afternoon that the West White Rose project in Argentia will begin immediately an orderly suspension at site.  For day’s our union leaders have been expressing strong concerns with how construction workers are not able to abide by the orders from the Chief Medical Officer to social distance themselves and avoid gatherings of over 50 people. Thankfully, people listened and our workers are able to go home to be safe with their families.”

  • Darin King, Executive Director, Trades NL

In a release, Husky announced it is working cooperatively with its contractors to safely suspend all activities, and to demobilize and secure its construction sites. Trades NL indicated its membership will work with the contractor to wind down operations and secure the site.

“Now, we encourage our members from the Argentia site to assist others in flattening the curve of the terrible COVID-19 virus by obeying the public health orders: only leave home if absolute necessary, refrain from large gatherings, practice social distancing, and clean regularly.”

  • Darin King, Executive Director, Trades NL

Trades NL members will be ready to put the project back on track when the health officials deem it safe to resume work.

“When the time is right and it is safe for our members to return to work, they will be back and ready to contribute to getting the gravity base structure constructed. We look forward to working with the project contractors to getting the project back on schedule, but our priority today has to be the safety and wellbeing of our workforce, and we thank Husky and the General Contractor, SDP, for recognizing this and taking the appropriate action.”
