Building Trades Launches Women in Trades Chapter in Newfoundland & Labrador

Tuesday, June 5, 2018

Trades NL is excited to announce the formation of Build Together Newfoundland & Labrador, a national program that promotes, supports and mentors women in the skilled construction trades.

Build Together Newfoundland & Labrador is comprised of tradeswomen, both apprentices and journey persons, along with important partnerships with Women in Resource Development, Office to Advanced Women Apprentices and Trades NL. Studies and industry reports show that a large population of skilled trade workers are nearing retirement.  An estimated 300,000 new workers will need to be recruited from outside the construction industry over the next ten years to compensate the gap.

“Our Council recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion in the trades workplace and encourages women to take advantage of the enormous opportunities available in the skilled trades.”

  • Darin King, Executive Director, Trades NL

Across the country, there are Chapters in British Columbia, Yukon, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and now Newfoundland & Labrador, which includes members from Labrador to Witless Bay.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have a Build Together, Women of the Building Trades Chapter in Newfoundland & Labrador to add to the roster of provincial chapters across the country. NL has been ahead of the game for years in terms of the recruitment and retention of women in trades and we have a lot to learn from them in terms of best practices. Their participation in the program will benefit our industry across Canada.”

  • Lindsay Amundsen, Director of Workforce Development, Canada’s Building Trades Unions

In Newfoundland & Labrador, 13% of skilled trades workers are women, whereas, only 4% of skilled trade workers across the country are women.

“I am feeling excited and energized to be a part of this new group of women, with a cross section of trades and experiences that will represent women in the workplace.  We are going to work hard to get this Build Together chapter established here in Newfoundland & Labrador.”

  • Diane Pye, Occupational Health & Safety Officer, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local 1620

The Build Together Newfoundland & Labrador Chapter has set out the following vision: exposing women to the trades; mentoring women in the trades; making space for women in the trades; and developing partnerships.

“I am proud to be part of this new chapter and look forward to supporting and representing women in our trades.  Inclusive and safe workplaces make for a more productive and respectful jobsite, where everyone can take pride in their career.”

  • Krista Cox, Training Director, Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union, Local 1

Trades NL is an umbrella labor organization which promotes and coordinates the interests of 16 building and construction trades unions, their international affiliates, and more than 15,000 trades workers in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
